You guys usually have weather like this? Nothin' but rain and sleet... it's enough to get anybody down. [He looks back at the video feed, grinning.]

That said, since the weather's keepin' me in, thought I'd bug ya all with a question or two.

First, I'm tryin' ta fix up a place to stay. This place doesn't happen to've dragged in a hardware store or somethin', does it? Anyplace I could pick up some tools? Be nice ta get my hands on a bit of paint an' plaster, too.

Second thing is I've been hearin' a lot about what happened last week, and somebody told me weird things happen every other week 'round this joint. Anybody willin' to tell me stories about what they've seen when? You never know, maybe we can figure out what's comin' if we look at what's happened before.

Anybody ta watch out for? I've heard there are some dangerous guys runnin' around.

The hardware store, what was left it has been picked over but if you need tools I can lend you what I grabbed.

I can tell you what I've seen, but you might want to sit down first. There's a lot of it.

Oh whoa, yo! The blocks!

[He got so caught up in the composer thing, they just went and slipped his mind.]

Aight, yo! I'll go an' find some right now! You jus' keep chill!

[Hanging up, he'll call you back later when he's found some]

[He'll be waiting... and laughing to himself, just a little.

That was way easier than it should've been.]

You've been here for a while, huh? Well, I've got notepaper. Hit me.

Hmm, shame ta hear about the store. I'd say plaster, a putty knife and a hammer's all I need for the moment -- got a busted window that needs somethin' nailed over it and a crack in the wall. Place isn't about ta fall down around my ears or anythin' like that, it's just not too weatherproof.

First thing that happened when I got here was altered timelines. At some point we all make a choice, right? It affects who we become. A lot of people here turned away from bad choices, and the Animus reversed that.

I've got the knife and hammer, plaster is a bit harder to come by.

... That's interestin'. Was it like they replaced people with somebody who'd made different choices, or did they all remember bein' here even with their life changed?

Yeah, so I hear. I'm startin' to wonder if I should just rip some drywall out an' cook it till it falls apart again. Haven't got the kiln for it, though.

They remembered this place. When they returned to normal, they remembered who they were in the other life too.

Yeah, but we can make a Kiln or at least a makeshift one.

Fancy stuff. [Well; the spirits here have proved they can alter memories -- it's more reasonable to think they'd done that than that they'd pulled in replacements for all of their prisoners and screwed with their memories. But where are they getting the power?] Anythin' else? I've got the last couple months' worth down already, so don't worry about those.

True enough. Wouldn't wanna waste too much charcoal on it, though -- or firewood, if that's all we've got.

Yeah, they clamped down on everyone with power a bit back reducing them all to human levels. For two whole weeks and we're talking about people like the devil, and so on were powerless.

Well there's always seeing what the dragons The Wastes might be able to do for it. If they have some means to keep things hot, we could use that.

[Everything is easier with Beat.

He'll turn the video back on much later. He's drenched but he looks pleased with himself]

Yo! Told you I'd find some!

[He'll pan the camera around and focus on a pile of blocks. They're mostly about even, a few are smaller or broken, but there are some that look useable. They looked to have been part of a building that collapsed]

Two weeks, huh? I thought most of these things just lasted the one.

... and ya know, that's not a bad idea. Hadn't heard about this place havin' dragons. [Noise drakes, or something more mythological? Well -- he hasn't seen any Noise around here yet. Probably the firebreathing sort.]

Not bad! Where're ya at? I can help ya haul some of those.

[The useable ones, anyway; it looks like there's enough of those to set up a decent enclosure for a fire. No mortar, of course, but as long as it's small and no one runs into it....

Maybe he can cake some mud over the inside, let it bake solid.]

That was the interesting part of that one. Heard about the time the filters were failing, even for the Animus?

They're out in the Wastes. Tough and hard to track but once you do, they're there.

Haven't heard about that one yet. Did it happen on the same schedule?

[Eyebrows up.] Anybody managed to talk to 'em, or are they just animals?

[He fumbles with his PCD till he hits the button that transmits his coordinates... though that was obviously on accident as the video swings again just a few moments later and Beat is recording his surroundings]

Ain't far, yo, didn't take me long to walk. Jus' be careful, ain't easy.

From my understanding, one of the Animus actually possessed his body. There seemed to be some serious repercussions, though, but I'm not sure exactly what happened...

Right around it, if I remember right.

Seems like they're just animals. I haven't heard a word out of them and I did try to talk first. [Banter really but still counts.]

[Hanekoma checks the coordinates, ignoring the motion-sickness-inducing view of Beat's surroundings, and grins.] Be there in a few.

[He closes down the feed and heads out to the location Beat'd sent. It's not that far, after all; but the kid wasn't joking about the terrain. No wonder he found some bricks here. The buildings are in serious ruins, and picking his way over them in sandals is tricky.

Five minutes of that, and he's glad to spot that black cap. He waves.] Heya!

Hmm.

['Serious repercussions,' indeed. If they're anything like as high-powered as they seem to be, that sort of thing could wipe the original personality right off the map.

He shakes his head. These things don't operate on any level he's familiar with; their rules might be different, too.] Glad that's over, in any case. Did the guy come out of it in one piece?

Huh. [Are the strange events not driven by the Animus? Why would they cause their own devices to malfunction?]

Might not speak the same language. [He wonders if imprinting would work.] Well, it's gonna be hard gettin' them to heat up the right pile of drywall if I can't communicate.

Yo, Coffee-man!

[Beat returns the wave, seemingly more at ease around Hanekoma now. He's grinning, at anyrate, and not suspiciously oogling]

How many trips you think it'll take, yo? Bricks ain't 'xactly light.

Wish we had a wheelbarrow. Well, they're not that big, we can probably get two or three of 'em apiece per trip...

[Doing a bit of mental math.] Five trips oughta do it. Think you're up for it?

Bring it, yo!

[You just laid down a challenge.

Beat accepts it with gusto.

He'll start gathering as many as he can hold, which is indeed about three and starts heading back towards the house, with as much grace as a drunken moose]
